The Ship Sails Itself

Written by Callum Gough

A song about driverless ships written by an engineer who worked with driverless trains.

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

I have picked up my quill and I’ve kicked up my feet
Writing songs and tall stories ’bout the folks I did meet
Well it is all said and done now that books on the shelf
For a crew needs no Captain when the ship sails itself

A new dawn is upon us, a change of the tides
There’s these ships with no captains that just sail day and night
They’ll sail through the storms, through sleet and through snow
These ships just go sailing where you point them to go

CHORUS

Well the crew seem unphased though they work day and night
No man at the helm sure does give you a fright
They still swab the decks and they do with good cheer
Cause a ship with no Captain means the crew get more beer

CHORUS

What’s a Captain to do with no crew and no ship
I could turn hand at fishing, but the smell makes me sick
I could always try baking and do that instead
but a hook for a hand makes it hard to bake bread

CHORUS

I’ve been out on dry land for a year now it seems
The last time I went sailing was all in my dreams
But don’t shed a tear, no, don’t shed one for me
For you don’t need a ship when you’ve good company
