Want to see your shanty in our lyric library? Want your favourite lyrics added to the website? Help us get those lyrics around to the crew's grubby fingers!

Before submitting a Shanty, please search to see if it has already been added.
Please read the sample text and instructions as you go through this page.
All submissions are vetted and will likely be edited before publishing.

Thanks for contributing to the Shanty Collection of our Dreams!

This will be public - please put "Anonymous" if you are so inclined.

You can also add if this is a specific version
e.g. South Australia (NSFW Version)

Add any authorship info, or who it was first performed by or who adapted it etc. This will also be written underneath the title in page view. e.g. Written by Robert Boddington and Clayton Vickery

e.g. South Australia is the classic Shanty Club opening song you probably learned in primary school. It doesn't give very good instructions on how to get to South Australia.

Provide historical context, a cool fun fact, why this piece was written or any performance notes and links you would like to share.

Adding Lyrics

Whether it be in the Chorus or the Verses:

  • Use regular text for things sung by the Shanty's "Leader"

  • Use bold text to show that it is unison

Between verses, please don't write out the entire chorus again. Simply Write CHORUS or CHORUS.

The "CHORUS" is whatever is repeated and whatever you "teach" for everyone to sing together. In songs with changing lyrics, feel free to put the placeholder/teaching lyrics in the chorus section.

e.g. Heave away you rolling kings Heave away, haul away Heave away now hear me sing We're bound for South Australia!

[Bold doesn't work in placeholder text so see what should be bold written with ** around it ** e.g. In South Australia I was born **Heave away, Haul Away** South Australia, 'round Cape Horn **We're bound for South Australia** CHORUS As I walked out one morning fair **Heave away, Haul Away** It's there I met miss Nancy Blair **We're bound for South Australia** CHORUS She shook me up, she shook me down. **Heave away, Haul Away** She shook me round and round the town, **We're bound for South Australia** etc. (Usually people only sing up to 5 verses, but you can provide more - You can suggest which ones are usually sung too.)

Add some tags to help people find this shanty!

We acknowledge the Gadigal and Bidjigal people of the Eora nation, upon whose lands we gather and sing.
We acknowledge sovereignty was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
