The Reluctant Shanty

Written by Robert Boddington and Jack Ballhausen

Written in collaboration with UNHCR to create a song for boat refugees, sailors who never wanted to go to see in the first place, and sung on world refugee day.

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

So I'll leave all I know, in the search for a home

There's no way of knowing how far I must roam

I'll cling onto courage, I'll fight the wild sea

I'll hold tight to hope 'til the day I am free.

No sailor am I with no compass no plan
cast out on the ocean for all that I am
It’s a chance without choice that has put me to sea
so I’ll hold tight to hope ’til the day I am free

CHORUS

Through storms and through gunfire, we whispered goodbyes
is this where the boat breaks? is this where we die?
There’s a light in the dark and it’s calling to me:
“Just hold tight to hope ’til the day you are free”

CHORUS

If we're lucky to land on new shores with new skies

We're strung up and tied up by suits and by ties

They pick and they choose like we're tins on a shelf

You're seen as number and not as yourself

CHORUS

No sailor am I with no compass no plan
cast out on the ocean for all that I am
It’s a chance without choice that has put me to sea
so I’ll hold tight to hope ’til the day I am free

CHORUS x 2
