The Cable Shanty

Written by Dan Schneider

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

We take out the cables then we swap them all out,

New cables are better of that I have no doubt,

Once we’ve swapped the cables we are ready to grin,

Now everybody knows where the stuff is plugged in.

I’ve been a cabler for four long years,
Cleaned up the server racks but never met with a cheer,
I’m feeling like a sailor on the cords heave and haul,
When I see unlabelled cables boy do I blow a squall,

CHORUS

Unplug a cable here and plug it in over there,
Looking at messy cables makes me pull out my hair,
Don’t plug them anywhere or leave them in a heap,
Go down to the store where the cable ties are cheap,

CHORUS

I’m in the air conditioned server room and it’s cold,
Surrounded by the cables from the days of old,
Put my hands to my head and I let out a scream,
There’s cables in this rack that are older than me,

CHORUS

One piece of advice I have for IT people bold,
You should always replace your cables well before they get old,
Keep your server rack tidy and free of rust,
And every second week give the whole thing a dust.

CHORUS x 2

We acknowledge the Gadigal and Bidjigal people of the Eora nation, upon whose lands we gather and sing.
We acknowledge sovereignty was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
