The Ballad of William Oxley

Written by Henry Beissel

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

"Oh Liza, Liza, come be by my side"

He called across the empty town,

And the stars burned bright across the western sky

As he lay there dying on the ground

Well he came so far across the rolling main
He came so far old Oxley
Just to die in the streets of the dusty western plain
In that little town called mudgee

CHORUS

A farmer first, just like he was before
A farmer first, old Oxley
But here he became an officer of the law
Even though his end it would be

CHORUS

“Come down, come down”, young JB did bemoan
Come down come down, old Oxley
“I played that clarinet too loud near Maurice Daltons home
And i think he is after me”

CHORUS

“Go home, go home”, to Dalton he declared
Go home, go home, old Oxley

“You’ve caused enough of your trouble, now just get back to your bed
And we can all just leave this be”

CHORUS

Well Dalton struck a blow upon his head
Well Dalton struck old Oxley
Then he left him stumbling and in the night he fled
And left his victim on the street

CHORUS

As blood ran down well Oxley saw his death
As blood ran down old Oxley
And while gazing those southern stars he took his final breath
The very last thing he would see

CHORUS x 2
