Lone Prairie

Trad.

a famous country/folk song, which also happens to be an adaptation of a 1839 sea song called "The Ocean Burial". A sort of recursive shant, if you will.

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

"Oh, bury me not on the lone prairie

Where the coyotes howl and the wind blows free

Where not a soul will care for me

Well, bury me not on the lone prairie"

“Oh, bury me not on the lone prairie”

These words came low and mournfully

From the pallid lips o' a youth who lay

On his dying bed at the close of day

CHORUS

"It matters not, oh I've been told

Where the body lies when the heart goes cold

But grant, oh grant, this wish to me

Well, bury me not on the lone prairie"

CHORUS

"I wish to lie where a mother's prayer

Or sister's tear can mingle there

Where friends can come and weep oer me

Well, bury me not on the lone prairie"

CHORUS

"Oh bury me not", his voice failed there

And we took no heed o' his dying prayer

In a narrow grave just six by three

Well, we buried him there on the lone prairie

CHORUS

And the cowboys now, as we roam the plains

For we marked the spot where his bones were lain

Fling a handful o' roses oer his grave

And a prayer to God for his soul to save

CHORUS x 2
