Juliana

Traditional

These lyrics are from Barry Finn (U.S.), who heard the song from a Polish chantey singer, Mareck Schakowsky, who in turn got it from Roy Harris (U.K.). Roy found the tune and a fragmentary text on a recording in the Robert W. Gordon collection at the Library of Congress. Just as Roy and Barry have provided verses today, so did the sailors and collectors in their day. Barry Finn says he picked it up from Mareck Schakowsky in the summer of 1992 during the tall ships visit to Boston (U.S.). Mareck was acting as first mate aboard the wishbone schooner the Zawisza Czarny (the Black Knight).

CHORUS

Juliana, Juliana where do you go?

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

Juliana, Juliana where do you go?

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

Up aloft, up aloft this spar must go

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

Up aloft, up aloft from down below

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

Around Cape Horn there's ice and snow

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

But around Cape Horn we've got to go

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

The mate is a-bawlin' down below

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

So heave away, let's stamp and go

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

When I get back from 'cross the sea

Ah Ha! Me London Julie

Gonna ask Juliana to marry me

Ah Ha! Me London Julie
