Beer Baron

Written by Robert Boddington and Clayton Vickery

A biographical song about the infamous Sydney Beer Baron who may, or may not, have been an owner of The Dock Bar at one point.

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS:

Beer Baron, Beer Baron

Come donate some beer to me.

Beer Baron, Beer Baron

and I'll give to your charity.

There was a young fella in Sydney they say

And he roamed about in the night not the day

He handed out grog, but never took pay

Til old Johnny Law came and took him away

CHORUS

If late in the night you were out on a burst

And wanted so badly to slake that big thirst

The pubs and the shops were closed and you’d curse

That’s when the Beer Baron would unstring his purse

CHORUS

Like Noah’s Ark you would arrive in twos

And inquire so gently bout grog and bout booze
He said “now my friends there’ll be no vending here,
But I do have this gift basket loaded with beer.”

CHORUS

Sadly my friend it’s against the law

To sell booze at night and we’re almost at four
What isn’t illegal is gifts between friends
Like presents or booze or that cash in your hands

CHORUS

That cash in your hand you would kindly donate
And separately he gifts that beer to your mate
Both parties leave with much satisfaction
Just to be clear this was not a transaction

CHORUS

The city of Sydney was displeased with his tricks

They wanted to wrap him in mortar and bricks

The Baron was cuffed and put in the sticks

To wait for a judge to hand out his verdict

CHORUS

You’d think that the Baron was done in my friends

That this was the way that this bold story ends

But Beer Baron was freed to no serious remands

It helps when the judge is one of your patrons

CHORUS x2
