Shan't Go Back to Shanty Club

Written by Robert Boddington and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd

A song written in a car about the perils of becoming a regular at shanty club.

LYRICS

00:00 / 03:39

CHORUS

I shan't go back to Shanty Club,

I shan't go back again

I shan't go back to Shanty Club,

To see my bossom friends

Oh I shan't go back, I can't go back,

I won't go back again

Oh I won't go back to Shanty Club,

Cause shanties never end

CHORUS

And on that curs-ed Monday
When I first found the Dock
It was the calm before the storm
But then came 9 o’clock
I didn’t sleep, I didn’t eat
I sung all night instead
And all week long that seaman’s song
Was stuck inside my head

CHORUS

Well the boss comes up this morning
Says [NAME] well don’t ya know
You’re always bleary eyed on Tuesdays
I’m afraid you’ll have to go.’
So I asked for all me wages
I demanded all me pay
And I cursed that curse-ed Shanty Club
For taking my job away

CHORUS

Well the wife she’s gone and left me
She’s taken both the boys
She said ‘you’re not the man I knew
Who gave me all me joys
You used to last for hours
But now when we’re in bed
You’ll flip me round and tuck me in
And swab the floors instead.’

CHORUS

And as I lay down on my death bed
With no one to mourn me
I’ll curse the Redfern Shanty Club
For leaving me in poverty
Oh I won’t go up to heaven
To hell I’ll haul away
Where I’ll sing shanties all night long
And all the bloody day

CHORUS x2
