The Way Home

Written by Kip Elder

Shanty Club's first ever Original Shanty

LYRICS

00:00 / 01:04

CHORUS

The stern sail's on fire (BRACE!)

There are holes in our side and the main mast lies deep in the sea

Row hard and row home now

The ship may be sinking but row on for our family

My father was Old Grey
And he had him great whiskers that told of his time on the sea
And they knew him as a hard man
But I remember the smile on his face as I sat on his knee

CHORUS

My mother was Mary
When she laughed it was thunderclouds clapping will all of their might
And not a creature more gentle
But when her family was threatened by God how that woman could fight

CHORUS

My brothers and sisters
You are villains and tricksters and all of the rest
But I drown with you gladly
For my family is here with me now from the helm to crows nest

CHORUS x 2

We acknowledge sovereignty was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
